Jes MaHarry Jewelry Designer

California artist Jes MaHarry is influenced and inspired by her surroundings - her ranch near Ojai, her animals, and the ever-changing beauty of nature. Her jewelry is intensely personal, always inspiring, and often surprising in its unusual juxtaposition of refined and rugged elements. For Jes, what began as a quiet observation of nature, has evolved into a passionate love, not only of nature, but of life itself.

jewelry designer
Frog Pond Ring
With the mysterious green beauty and shiny depths of a natural forest pool, a dimensional Prehnite cabochon is framed by a leaf-etched bezel on a textural silver band.

Named after its discoverer Colonel Hendrik von Prehn, Prehnite is an attractive collection mineral that is used for jewelry and occasionally used for ornamental stone purposes. Its color is usually a very beautiful green that appears in a shade that could be considered unique to Prehnite. Found in association with volcanic rocks, it usually forms in aggregates and has a rather thick crust with a rough or crystalline texture. The rough texture makes it difficult for faceting but it can be cut in a cabochon to reveal its unusual color.

jewelry techniques
Mighty Oak Necklace
Jes MaHarry adorns an assortment of handmade sterling links with charms and philosophy. The center charm is etched with a mighty oak on one side, and the words grow strong on the other. The words enjoy life, dream, and love + joy are inscribed upon individual links. Made in USA with a lobster clasp. Approx. 21-1/2"L.

Jes MaHarry's Sun Horse Ranch is in the Ojai valley, a couple of miles outside town. Room to roam for the herd of animals the artist has been collecting - horses, dogs, cats. The aged parrot. The pair of wild burros, just rescued from starvation in the Nevada desert. Jes and her partner, metalsmith Patrick Henderson, have only been on this land for a short time. They've already built a house filled with light, a hay barn, and an expanded Sun Horse workshop - not to mention corrals, paths and the beginnings of a semi-desert garden.

designer jewelry
Pearl of Truth Earrings
Endless rings of 14k rose gold represent the wholeness of life.
Each hovers beneath a cultured white pearl, Jes's symbol for truth.
Handcrafted in USA with 14k gold lever backs.

Jes wanted to make jewelry before she knew how to. She comes from a family of artists in New York State. Her earliest pieces used found objects: earrings made with feathers, creek stones and rusty bottle caps, and old washers pounded into rings. She taught herself the fine art of silversmithing, then worked drudge jobs after college to finance her jewelry-making equipment, purchasing one piece at a time. Now her palette includes authentic African trade beads, Gaspeite, Tibetan Turquoise, Oxblood Coral, Sterling Silver and 14k Gold.

Artist Statement
Family tradition gave me the freedom to experiment, to take risks and create the life and art I wanted. People say my pieces make them feel good; some people wear my jewelry as a personal amulet. If the pieces bring good luck, I think maybe it comes from my absolute love of doing it. Of designing every piece. Maybe the good luck comes from what goes into the work - passion, hope, and some feeling for risk, for adventure, for overcoming any challenge.

I design my jewelry with the hope that it will bring a bit of beauty to our world, and a measure of solace and peace to you. I try to represent the wonder of the natural and spiritual worlds through my work. I hope it resonates in a deeper place within you. Be free and love life.

Our Mission
We believe that through compassion, there is beauty. Through love, there is art. We believe that we are only free through being kind. That there is grace in generosity. We believe that there is dignity in all living things.See full article.

Summer Stones, Winter Jewels

When I mix gemstones for bracelets, I mix because of a paradigm that I've adhered to for quite a while. I see many gemstones in terms of season. That may sound stupid, but I simply can't help it, and if you look at many of the jewelry pieces that I design, you can see this particular mind-set of mine at work. First, let me say that I wear all gemstones at almost any time of the year - this is something that happens when I'm creating. And, let me add that the precious gemstones that I use: ruby, sapphire, and emerald seem to me to be seasonless - that is, they can be for the hottest day of summer or the coldest of winter, but with certain other coloured stones, I have a definite prejudice!
Above you see one example: a citrine bracelet with two strands of citrine and silver; now, that is definitely a summer bracelet as is the aquamarine bracelet that you see below:Of course, the link is easy, you think: sea and sun! But if you look at the rainbow moonstone bracelet below because of the white (beneath the blue flash) most people would think of summer. Not I! Rainbow moonstone is a winter stone; I have the same idea about labradorite jewelry. I attribute it to the blue flashes that they have that always remind me of the Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights and conjure up visions of snow, reindeer in Lapland, the icy lands of Norway and Finland.
Sunstone is one of those stones that reminds me of hot summers - and also, hot days of Autumn, before that first chill sets in. It truly is a warm stone. And as one might think, when I mix pastel colours largely for one of my unique bracelets, it usually turns out to be a summer bracelet.
So what season is the peacock blue apatite and sunstone bracelet? The addition of the dark peacock blue makes it seasonless, adding the cool tones of winter to that hot summer sun. I've also de-seasoned a bracelet with labradorite as well - adding some aquamarine for summer and balancing the two stones with amethyst (which I think of as Fall and Spring)and a couple of dichroic beads for extra sparkle. To make the top citrine bracelet Fall-worthy, I would probably add some ocean jasper to it.
I know that some designers prefer to consult a colour wheel, but we all design in our own way - and sometimes in a way that perhaps makes sense only to one person.

Above is a "seasonless" emerald bracelet.

Colorful Freshwater Pearls

Multicolor pearls are one of the hottest trends this year. Freshwater pearls come in various pastel shades of white, pink, peach, lavender, plum, purple, and tangerine, depending on the type of mussel. Freshwater pearls come from freshwater mussels. Nothing is more natural than a pearl. Unlike gemstones, that are cut and polished to unleash their beauty, pearls emerge from the creature that conceived them.

pearl jewelry
Fiona Lavender Freshwater Pearl Ring
Genuine 9 to 10mm lavender freshwater button pearl.
Sterling silver and white gold plate.

Formation
Natural Freshwater pearls are formed within a mussel. These mussels open their shells slightly and allow water to flow in, so that they can take nutrients from the microscopic particles and organisms in the water. Small irritants such as small animals can also float in. Parasites can drill right through the mussel's hard shell. To protect itself, the mussel encloses the irritant in a sac and then secretes layer upon layer of nacre around the irritant, that in time produces a lustrous pearl.

jewelry techniques
Freshwater Pearl Multicolor Drop Style Necklace
Natural multicolor pearls: white, pink, and lavender.
8mm pearls suspended from a 16" chain.
Sterling silver chain and setting.

Pearl Color
Freshwater pearl color is determined by the mussel itself and environmental factors that affect the nacre as it is layered. The most prevalent natural colors are whites, as well as pastel colors in both pinks and lavenders. White pearls are still by far the most popular, but pastels in pinks and lavenders have slowly edged their way into the fine jewelry marketplace. The two colors are very popular for second strands, mixed-color strands or when a less traditional look is desired. Light pink and lavender are naturally occurring colors in freshwater pearls, but their colors can be enhanced after processing.

designer jewelry
Golden and Dark Chocolate Freshwater Pearl Necklace
These 8-8.5mm, AA+ quality pearls have a great luster and inner shine. The necklace is 18" long and is strung on double silk thread, knotted between each pearl. The clasp is solid 14k gold.

Pearl Value
The value of Freshwater pearls can vary based on specific factors such as roundness, luster, size, surface quality, and color. As the pearls are nucleated with only tissue, they are 100% nacre. Pearl matching for finished jewelry pieces is also very important.

Shape
As cultured freshwater pearls are tissue nucleated only about two percent of any given harvest is round. As a result, roundness is one of the most important factors in the evaluation of freshwater pearls.

Luster
Pearls produce an intense, deep shine called luster. This effect is created when light reflects off the many layers of tiny calcium carbonate crystals that compose the pearl. This substance is called nacre. The more light reflected and the clearer the image, the better the pearl's luster. The luster of Freshwater pearls may be different than those of saltwater. Freshwater pearls tend to have a satin finish.

Size
Pearls can range in size from 1mm seed pearls to huge 20mm South Sea pearls. Cultured pearls of 6 - 7.5mm are the most common, above this size the price jumps upward rapidly with each half-millimeter from 7.5mm up. To date the largest pearl recorded is a 26.95mm baroque south sea pearl.

Surface Markings
As a mollusk creates a pearl, the layers of nacre do not always adhere smoothly. Sometimes spots and bubbles can appear in the layering process. Pearls with the smoothest surfaces are the highest-quality, most sought-after pearls.See full article.
