Jane Bohan Jewelry

Metalsmith and Jewelry Designer
Jewelry artist Jane Bohan strives to blend her love of art and fashion by creating work that is beautiful and innovative, yet wearable. Her vision is inspired by forms in nature and energized by her urban environment. Dramatic colors and patterns are central elements in her designs. The integrity of each piece relies upon a combination of design originality, precise craftsmanship, and carefully selected materials.

Dimensions: 0.625"L
$1300

Rather than sketching ideas on paper, Jane Bohan works directly with the materials. She feels this tactile approach best allows her to create the drape of a necklace or the swing of an earring. The artist expresses her creative spirit through combinations of surface textures, rich colored gold, bold gemstones, and luscious pearls. The result is jewelry with a soft, sculptural quality that is the very embodiment of femininity.

Dimensions: 0.375"W
$1900

Unlike mass-produced jewelry, every Jane Bohan creation is handmade to her exacting standards by jewelers in her New York City studio. Fusing dramatic color with innovative yet wearable design, Jane Bohan has established a reputation as a leader in designer jewelry. Most importantly, for almost two decades, women have continued to covet her jewelry for its feminine simplicity, unusual textures, coloration, and versatility.

Jane learned her craft at the Rhode Island School of Design, but she finds her design inspiration in New York City, particularly from the dynamic fashion world that is just around the corner from her studio, and the flea markets that keep design history at her fingertips.

Awards
Since 1995, Jane has received four prestigious Spectrum Awards from the American Gem Trade Association for her innovative use of colored gemstones, and both the Tahitian Pearl Council and the World Gold Council have honored Jane's work. Her fashion insight is often in demand by leading fashion magazine editors.

Jane Bohan has also been lauded by her peers for her important contributions to the field of designer jewelry. Most recently, she was elected to the board of the International Jewelry Design Guild, an organization that promotes and creates excitement for original designer jewelry.

Her uncanny ability to predict significant fashion trends and translate them into timeless, wearable designs has garnered her a host of industry awards and recognition from the international fashion press. She has regularly been quoted in a variety of national magazines including InStyle, Mirabella, and Vogue.

Artist Statement
I enjoy working from a particular theme and then designing a collection around it, which will continue to expand and evolve with time. My creative process may begin with sketching, but ultimately I am drawn to my jeweler's bench, where I discover new ideas while working directly with the metal.

My jewelry is an expression of my love for fashion and the elegance found in nature. I begin by playing with shape, color, and texture until I find a combination that is balanced, feminine, and sophisticated.

Anna Whitmore Designer Jewelry

Metal and Gemstone Jewelry
Anna Whitmore began her journey in jewelry design while still in high school; over the following years, her education within the craft of metalworking continued, though it was not a central part of her life. In 2003, with the encouragement of those close to her, Anna made the decision to plunge into the unknown and begin her own design company. Anna Whitmore Jewelry Design was born.

oxidized silver gemstone pendant
Strength Circle Necklace
Stamped and oxidized silver circle, Iolite gemstone, 14k yellow gold inner circle
Chain length: 16 inches
$137

Influenced by the subtleties of the natural world, jeweler Anna Whitmore combines hand-stamped pieces of oxidized silver with pearls, gemstones, and gold to create stunning, hand-fabricated pendants and earrings. These intricate pieces include stamped botanical designs created by the artist, featuring symbolically important flowers, leaves, and seed pods - White Oak leaves for independence, Stonecrop flowers for tranquility, Olive leaves for peace, Cedar cones for strength.

silver and gemstone earrings
Fate Teardrop Earrings
Stamped with the sisal flower and oxidized Sterling Silver teardrop, Andalusite gemstone, 14k pink gold
Earring size: 1 1/2 inches
$200

Flowers and trees have come to express meaningful sentiments, and Anna likes to share her interpretations of these forms and shapes through her jewelry. Her work uniquely combines symbolic botanical impressions with oxidized sterling silver, 14k Gold, natural gemstones, and rare pearls. She stamps meaning into every piece.

silver and pearl pendant
Independence Stick Pearl Necklace
Stamped and oxidized Sterling Silver bar, Golden Rutile gemstone, oxidized Sterling Silver chain
Chain length: 16 inches
$162

Anna Whitmore has been making jewelry for more than 10 years. She received jewelry and design training at the Mendocino Art Center and Santa Rosa Junior College. She works from her studio in beautiful Sonoma, California, and her jewelry can be found in fine galleries and boutiques around the country.

Japanese Keshi Pearls
Keshi pearls are a rare form of freshwater pearl. These pearls are only harvested every three years and are difficult to find in a high quality shape and luster. Anna uses these pearls in her designs because of their beautiful and uniquely organic shape.

Semiprecious Stones
All semiprecious stones used in Anna's designs are of natural origin (no dyed or heat treated stones), and are chosen for consistency in color and quality of cut.

Oxidized Sterling Silver
Much of Anna's work features oxidized sterling silver, which becomes more lustrous over time, and with wear it may begin to brighten on exposed surfaces and remain dark in recessions. Oxidized silver cannot be cleaned with chemicals; if necessary, use an old toothbrush, dish soap, and warm water.See full article.

Copper and Sterling and Gold, Oh My!

As I look over some of the jewelry pieces I've made in the past few days, I'm surprised by how varied they are. Do you see a theme here? I don't! Or perhaps the theme could be called "what is on top of the pile"! Because I've been trying to get ready for a trip to Washington this week, I'm attempting to clear off the work bench a bit. Believe me, it's slow going! Why? Because not only is everything piled high, but as I look through the different layers of beads, gemstones, wire and lampwork beads, a particular bead (or group of them) will stand out and suddenly I get an idea for a bracelet or necklace or. . . well, you get the idea.
So, above is a bracelet resulting from a strand of lampwork beads I failed to put away sitting next to Swarovski crystals newly unwrapped. The lampwork beads are from James Derrick Reeves, and I hope he starts lampworking and selling again soon before I run out of the precious stash of his beads I've been hoarding.
Below, a jasper bracelet that got made because I just had to use those dear little donuts in something! They are so cute! Therefore, I built a bracelet around them - and some more of Derrick's incomparable lampwork beads.

Copper was on my mind after an e-mail from a customer; I had copper chain and wondered just how Swarovski's crystal copper crystals would look with the metal. The result: the charm bracelet below with Swarovski large crystals, flowers, and butterfly. I will pair these two up again most definitely!

I can be subtle; the jasper bracelet above is beautiful with swirls of greyish-purple, mauve, and colour mixtures that I can't think how to describe. Hmm, I sense a theme: more Swarovski crystals (tanzanite, this time) and a large lampwork bead by James Derrick Reeves. The addition of a small flat drusy only adds to the low-key beauty of the bracelet.
The huge lampwork beads below were meant to be put in a necklace. Their impressionistic quality reminds me of a Monet painting. Rose quartz and amethyst echo the colours in the lampwork; the only other addition is sterling silver - and that's the only other thing that this necklace needs.

The smoky quartz bracelet, above, is about subtle sparkle since every smoky quartz stone is beautifully faceted. Again, a bit of sterling silver is all that is necessary here.
Below is the opposite of the smoky quartz bracelet. Listen to the Warm (below) features vermeil, pink Peruvian opal, aquamarine, and yellow and orange carnelian. It's a crazy sort of bracelet, but then, it sums up my last week perfectly!
In keeping with the crazy week,if you go to the Cluny Grey Jewelry website, you will notice that while I have pictures posted of most of the pieces here, most do not have the prices or descriptions yet. Patience, they are coming!

Micky Roof Handcrafted Jewelry

Unique Metal and Gemstone Jewelry
Micky Roof was introduced to the art of jewelry making by her high school art teacher, Edward Hoops, in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania. She earned a B.S. in Art Education from Mansfield State College in Mansfield, Pennsylvania, where she majored in jewelry design and fabrication; she took workshops with Stanley Lecthin from the Tyler School of Art at Temple University, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, trained at the Cheltenham Art Center in Philadelphia, and studied hollowware construction with Hans Christianson of the Rochester Institute of Technology.

Micky Roof's Latest Creations:

gold and gemstone pendant
Pink Tourmaline & Sapphire Pendant
Handcrafted 18k yellow gold pendant with tourmaline and sapphire gemstones.

Micky Roof has been a jewelry designer since 1972, specializing in custom designed, one-of-a-kind jewelry for a discriminating clientele who seek jewelry that makes a unique, personal statement. During this time, Ms. Roof has grown from a one-person studio to a shop of ten; her atelier is located on the Cayuga Lake Waterfront in Ithaca, New York.

18k Gold & Opal Pin
18k yellow gold pin with 11.47-carat opal gemstone.

Ms. Roof's trademark is her innate ability to go beyond the boundaries of conventional design into areas that reflect natural elements, using only extraordinary gems and precious materials to express these themes. Ms. Roof's work has been shown in several important galleries in the United States, and is collected by clients nationally and internationally.

yellow gold earrings
14k Yellow Gold Dangle Earrings

Uncompromising quality (reflected in the materials she uses, and in the execution of her craft) is a consistent characteristic of Ms. Roof's creations. "You can absolutely find less-expensive jewelry," she says, "and I wouldn't suggest otherwise. But, it's very unlikely that you'll find this level of quality in a lower price range. Superior quality has always been extremely important to me, and to my art...and in that context, our prices are absolutely realistic. For the consumer, the selection process depends upon knowing what's out there, and having a good sense of what will make you happy."

Artist Statement
The inspiration for my current body of work came to me as I stepped out my front door one fall afternoon. I have two majestic old white birch trees, which in this area of New York State are a real treasure. I was looking at the texture of their limbs and the fantastic colors of fall, and wondered how I could translate this into a piece of jewelry. This inspiration soon found me rendering the delicate textures of birch twigs and sticks in precious metals.

As I am also an avid collector of opals, I chose to put these two passions together - combining the stick shapes with the brilliant and varied colors of opals. The result is the Twig Collection. This body of work seems to have no end, like nature itself. This is the kind of design that I have been seeking for many years. There is no language barrier, nor cultural barrier. It is an expression that all human beings can recognize.

In addition to her own creative self-expression, Ms. Roof is dedicated to educating the public about the importance of public support for the arts in our communities.See full article.
