Unique Metal and Gemstone Jewelry
Micky Roof was introduced to the art of jewelry making by her high school art teacher, Edward Hoops, in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania. She earned a B.S. in Art Education from Mansfield State College in Mansfield, Pennsylvania, where she majored in jewelry design and fabrication; she took workshops with Stanley Lecthin from the Tyler School of Art at Temple University, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, trained at the Cheltenham Art Center in Philadelphia, and studied hollowware construction with Hans Christianson of the Rochester Institute of Technology.

Micky Roof has been a jewelry designer since 1972, specializing in custom designed, one-of-a-kind jewelry for a discriminating clientele who seek jewelry that makes a unique, personal statement. During this time, Ms. Roof has grown from a one-person studio to a shop of ten; her atelier is located on the Cayuga Lake Waterfront in Ithaca, New York.

Ms. Roof's trademark is her innate ability to go beyond the boundaries of conventional design into areas that reflect natural elements, using only extraordinary gems and precious materials to express these themes. Ms. Roof's work has been shown in several important galleries in the United States, and is collected by clients nationally and internationally.

Uncompromising quality (reflected in the materials she uses, and in the execution of her craft) is a consistent characteristic of Ms. Roof's creations. "You can absolutely find less-expensive jewelry," she says, "and I wouldn't suggest otherwise. But, it's very unlikely that you'll find this level of quality in a lower price range. Superior quality has always been extremely important to me, and to my art...and in that context, our prices are absolutely realistic. For the consumer, the selection process depends upon knowing what's out there, and having a good sense of what will make you happy."

Artist Statement
The inspiration for my current body of work came to me as I stepped out my front door one fall afternoon. I have two majestic old white birch trees, which in this area of New York State are a real treasure. I was looking at the texture of their limbs and the fantastic colors of fall, and wondered how I could translate this into a piece of jewelry. This inspiration soon found me rendering the delicate textures of birch twigs and sticks in precious metals.

As I am also an avid collector of opals, I chose to put these two passions together - combining the stick shapes with the brilliant and varied colors of opals. The result is the Twig Collection. This body of work seems to have no end, like nature itself. This is the kind of design that I have been seeking for many years. There is no language barrier, nor cultural barrier. It is an expression that all human beings can recognize.

In addition to her own creative self-expression, Ms. Roof is dedicated to educating the public about the importance of public support for the arts in our communities.See full article.
