Pav Diamond & Gemstone Jewelry

A pav setting is a style in which many small gemstones of the same shape are set in extremely close proximity. This mass formation effectively coats the metal surface. The gems are separated by and held in place by little beads of the setting metal. The result is what looks like a continuous surface of diamonds or other gems. The word Pav comes from the French word for pavement.

Pav is a very low-tech style of setting in which a goldsmith will drill V-shaped holes into the selected area of a jewelry item (or possibly the entire item) and then place the corresponding size diamonds into the holes, and then with another hand tool form tiny beads of metal from around the edge of the diamond and then carefully push these beads of metal over several spots on the edge of the diamond to hold the diamond in place.

Pav jewelry doesn't have to be all gold or all diamonds. Colorful sparkly gemstones Pav set in Sterling Silver makes beautiful jewelry, like the ring below. And Cubic Zirconia makes Pav jewelry much more affordable.

The term Micro Pav refers to the current style of jewelry where multitudes of small stones are set into the jewelry. The surface contains many closely spaced stones. What is different in the definition used today is the word micro and in the setting styles.

In years past, the term pav referred to the idea of gemstones being spaced very closely to cover the metal surface, and to the setting method. Stones were generally set using what is called bead setting, in which each stone was placed in a carefully drilled and tapered hole in the metal. The look is very clean and neat, creating an illusion to the eye of a sea of gemstones.

Today, the term micro pave refers to any very closely set tiny gemstones. Micro refers to the small size of the gems. Pave refers to the close setting of the stones and not to the method of setting. Setting is sometimes done with the old method of bead setting, but is often done with tiny prongs that are cast into the ring body. The problem with these modern styles is lost stones. So, the bench jeweler is not a fan of micro pave.See full article.
